Rail map for Sarajevo to Ploče
Currently there is only one international rail route functional between the two countries, and that is the route to Ploče from Sarajevo via Mostar.

If you are travelling from Sarajevo, you can purchase tickets for this train at the ticket office up to noon the day before travel. You can also buy tickets on board the train on the day.
If you are travelling from Ploče, you can only buy tickets on board the train on departure from Ploče.
You cannot buy tickets online for this service. Seat reservations are not available.
FIP coupons are not accepted for either ZFBH or HZPP. FIP discounted tickets can be purchased at 50% off at ticket offices before boarding.
Interrail tickets are valid throughout.
Northbound border checks are carried out on the Croatian side at Metković. The border patrol officers are complaint with the European Unions EES system and carry out face scans with mobile devices. Officers will come on board the train to complete their checks then the train will depart for Čapljina. At this point, you will have officially left the European Union. At Čapljina, Bosnian border guards will then complete their checks on board.
You are not allowed to leave the train during either of these checks, leaving the station at Metković is also not permitted. Once the checks are completed at Čapljina, you are free to leave the train.
Southbound border checks are carried out at Čapljina where Bosnian border guards will board the train and examine passports as you leave Bosnia. At time of writing, they are not equipped with exit stamps.
The train will then continue to Metković where Croatian border guards will join the train, and use the EES system equipped on their mobile devices to check you in to Croatia and the European Union. Once this is complete, the train will continue to Ploče.
You are not allowed to leave the train during either of these checks, leaving the station at Metković is also not permitted.
DELAYS often occur on this train, we would recommend allowing between 60-90 minutes minimum connection time at either end for onward travel arrangements

Sarajevo to Čapljina: ZFBH Class 441/9
Čapljina to Ploče: HZPP Class 1141 (usually 1141.302)
There are no further rail services from Ploče, the nearest rail connection in Croatia is in Split.
Regular Flixbus services run from the bus station at Ploče through to Split bus station.
Booking online in advance is neccasary, as these buses often fill up especially during the summer season.
Some buses also pass through and stop at Makarska bus station, a popular tourist destination in southern Croatia.
If you are travelling on a Sunday, you can connect in Split with the overnight train for Zagreb, more details on that service can be found here.
You can also head further west towards Zadar, or east towards Dubrovnik. Both, along with Split, also have airports with direct flights to the United Kingdom.
