Austria is one of the best connected countries in Europe for air travel and rail travel.
Regular flights run from the UK to the capital Vienna, along with Salzburg in the north west of the country, and Innsbruck in the far west sandwiched between Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Italy.
Other airports include Linz, Klagenfurt and Graz.
Travel to the city centre from Vienna airport is fairly straightforward. The station is located under the main airport terminal and is well signposted. On the way, you will pass a ticket office able to sell tickets actross Austria along with several self service machines where you can purchase and also collect tickets booked online.
There are three options to the city by rail.
The most expensive option.

All trains are Loco hauled with a dedicated fleet of coaches and Taurus locomotives
S Bahn Line S7 connects the airport with local stations across the east side of the city centre. Change to U3 & U4 at Wien Mitte for city centre.
Interrail, FIP & Coupons accepted on S-Bahn trains in Vienna, but not on U-Bahn trains.
S7 operates with ÖBB Class 4744 Siemens Desiro Cityjet EMU's
ÖBB operate regular long distance trains through Vienna Airport to the city centre and beyond.
Interrail, FIP & Coupons accepted, however you will also need to pay a 48 hour supplement on board when using FIP coupons for €10.
Locomotive hauled trains operate the majority of services, usually being Taurus hauled
Vienna offers a 24 hour ticket for the city including journeys to the airport. The zone is defined as the 'Kernzone' and the map of validity can be found here.
On the ticket machines located next to the ticket office at Vienna Airport, you will need to purchase the Airport + 24h Wien option. This will allow travel on all U Bahn, S Bahn, and mainline trains for 24 hours from the time of issue.
This ticket is also valid on Vienna's buses and trams. The price is currently €14,00.
A single fare on S Bahn trains or on board ÖBB mainline trains is €5,20 to most stations in the city centre, and single fares within the city zone are €3,20. Consider the 24 hour ticket option if you don't wish to use a day of an Interrail, or filling in a coupon box.
Travel to the city centre from Salzburg airport is provided directly by trolleybus route 2.
Trolleybuses connect the airport with Salzburg Hbf in around 25 minutes, serving the station Salzburg Aiglhof on the way for S Bahn connections.
Route 2 runs every 10 minutes during the day, with a reduced frequency on weekends. Timetable found here. The fare is €3 for a single with tickets available to be purchased from ticket machines and from the driver. You will receive a discount when using a ticket machine, or buying online and using the SVV app.
24 hour tickets are also available valid for the core zone of Salzburg which includes the airport. This ticket is also valid on mainline and S Bahn trains in the area.
Travel to Graz city centre is provided by ÖBB's S5 S-Bahn service. FIP coupons, FIP discounted tickets and Interrails are all valid. Trains run every 30 mins, and a single fare is currently €3,20 which is valid for one hour with connections.
S Bahn S5 is currently operated by ÖBB Class 4744 Siemens Desiros in Cityjet livery.
Graz Airport is also covered by the VST 24 hour ticket for Graz which costs €7.
Travel to Innsbruck city centre is possible by bus. Bus route F connects Innsbruck Airport to Innsbruck Hbf every 15 minutes with a journey time of under 20 minutes.
A single ticket costs €3,30, and a 24 hour ticket for the city will cost €7,30.
Travel to Linz city centre from Linz airport is a bit less straightforward than other Austrian airports.
The easiest method is by bus number 601 which is a half hourly (weekdays) bus direct to Linz city centre and Hauptbahnhof. The bus runs hourly on Sundays, and every 2 hours on Sundays. Tickets cost €4,10 one way
Alternatively, Linz Airport provides a free on demand shuttle bus linking the terminal with the local S Bahn station at Hörsching between 5am and 11pm. At the airport information desk on arrival, you can request the shuttle to take you to the station. When returning, there is a phone number to call on their website to book the return journey.
Hörsching station is on S Bahn line S2 which provides hourly trains to Linz. Some regional trains also call at Hörsching on the route between Linz and Salzburg
ÖBB S2 services are operated with Class 4744 Cityjet Desiro EMUs, however some are booked to run as hauled services with 1144s.
Located only a 10 minute walk from the terminal, Klagenfurt Annabichl Bhf provides an hourly service in each direction towards Villach and Klagenfurt Hbf.
